Midnight Moments
Where is your imagination leaning today?
The great blessing of facing a giant is the intense spiritual training you are thrust into.
For those who have followed my recent journey with health, you will know that I have titled this season Healing Boot Camp.
And I am weirdly loving it. Our greatest challenges can really be times of our greatest blessing when we lean into the voice of God with a spirit of faith and courage.
One of the lessons I learned early in this journey was the lesson of where I focus my attention.
It was a Wednesday evening, and I came home from another medical appointment with a new treatment pathway proposed. I settled into bed for the night and decided to study the treatment protocol. Well, let’s just say it wasn’t the most soothing bedtime reading. After filling my mind with facts and information, I fell into an exhausted sleep.
Not surprisingly, this sleep lasted about two hours. There I was at midnight, wide awake and in a state of shock regarding the treatments proposed. I got out of bed and started pacing the room, praying and looking to God to settle my heart.
After a couple of hours of praying and reading the Bible, I fell back into some sort of half-sleep. As I lay there, I sensed the voice of God deep in my spirit, speaking to me from His Word:
“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in You, all whose thoughts are fixed on You.” Isaiah 26:3
I knew the Lord was speaking to me about the importance of keeping my mind fixed on Him.
When the sun finally rose, I made myself a coffee and began to study the passage. In the richness of the Hebrew language, the Lord was calling His people to fill their imaginations with the reality of an infinitely loving and all-powerful God - to fill their imaginations with the goodness, blessings and possibilities of God rather than the challenges of the world.
Or, in the words of Young’s Literal Translation:
“An imagination supported by God fortifies peace - peace! for in God it is confident.”
I began to lean my imagination onto God and the promises of His Word rather than the facts and medical discourse surrounding the diagnosis I had received.
And my spirit filled with hope, life and peace.
It’s not that we ignore medical information, but it is not where we lean our hope, and it is certainly not to consume our imagination. Our hope, our heart and our imagination are the territory of the Spirit of God as we navigate the terrain of earth.
So where is your imagination leaning today? Lean it upon the steadfast love, hope and faithfulness of God, and peace will flood your soul.
Selah.
